This is the book I was talking about: “If You Knew Me Would You Love Me?” which tells the experience of this Irish psychologist who lives with Dissociative Identity Disorder, once defined Multiple Personality Disorder. I found this book incredibly helpful on three different levels, as it is intended for people who suffer from this condition, for their loved ones who wish to support them and for therapists as well. [The book] delves into a very complex topic yet in an extraordinarily clear and straightforward manner. The author has a very smooth writing style and she gives practical advice as well, allowing readers to understand how this mental condition arises and what approach they should take to connect with people who live with it. Moreover, it led me to the realisation that both in film and media (e.g. films and tv shows) and in other books I have happened to read, there’s either a “fantastic” depiction of such condition, hence completely misleading and far from reality, or an accurate representation that is, however, very hard to properly understand. So I strongly believe that the main asset of this book is its ability to convey accurate and meaningful information with a deeply accessible approach, so as to cater to anyone who’s interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the subject.
